Midnight blaze destroys candle factory in Mangalore

MANGALORE: A major fire gutted the entire production scented candle facility at Primary industries of Manipal group at Baikampady industrial area late on Thursday night.
Barring minor injury to a staff there have been no casualties in the incident. The loss is said to running in crores of rupees.
Chief Fire Officer Varadarajan who reached the site of the accident an hour after iut was noticed by locals who were attending a festivity at Angaragundi, said that they were informed late and they reached the spot by 11.30 pm.
Noticing the extent of damage in the facilities spread over a production area of 1.50 lakh sq ft, he said that it was not possible for fire to spread so rapidly at all corners of the facility. The fire usually spreads from one side or where it originates. In this case the intensity of fire all around the facility was the same,” he said.
No official from Primacy was available for comment. The production schedule is round the clock across three shifts. About 14 fire vehicles from Kudremukh, NMPT and MRPL, also from neighbouring Udupi district of Udupi, taluks of Karkala, Putturv were rushed to the spot.
Despite efforts by the fire personnel the fire was not under control even on Friday morning. Fire chief said that though outside fire was contained, fire inside the production facility was not under control. He hoped that it could be controlled in another hour or two.Primacy Industries is one of the largest manufacturers of premium scented designer candles in the world. Operating out of Mangalore, Primacy caters to some of the biggest stores in the US, Europe and the Middle East. For Indian customers candles are sold under the ‘Ekam’ brand.
