Updated: 2016-09-17 22:10
The two-storey building caught fire at around 12.15am.
Village head Lim Tong Hai said he was resting at home when he received a phone call at 12.25am from a villager informing him of the incident.
“I rushed to the location to find that half of the building was burning and that some volunteer firemen were trying to put out the flames while waiting for the Fire and Rescue Department to arrive,” he said on Saturday.
He also contacted Ayer Hitam MCA division chief Ling Tian Soon who rushed to the scene of fire.
Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Wahib Musa said the building was also used to store the association’s materials and prayer items while prayers were conducted on the upper floor.
“The local community is saddened by the incident as the building has been used by the association for generations,” he said.
ACP Abdul Wahib said nobody was hurt in the incident and the cause of fire was still being investigated.
He also advised the community to not jump to conclusions while investigations were being carried out.
