Senior citizen and two grandchildren die in fire

KOTA KINABALU: A 60-year-old man and his two grandchildren perished in a late night fire that razed their wooden house at Kampung Baru in Sandakan.
The charred remains of Osman Lawidu and his granddaughters Nurul Natasha, 11, and Nurul Musdalifah, 10, were found by firemen inside the wooden house after they put out the fire at about 10.30pm Monday.
Sandakan Fire and Rescue Services Department officer Anddre Andrew said the three of them were the only occupants in the house at the time of the fire which was completely put out at 1.30am Tuesday.
He said that two other older grandchildren were looking after their grandmother at the hospital.
The cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained and firemen believe that the three were trapped and were unable to escape when they realised that the house was on fire.
