In a gambling-related case, a 45-year-old Hong was arrested for setting fire to his neighbor’s street vender stand after losing money at Kangwonland, in Gangwon Province, the only casino in Korea where Korean national can gamble legally.
The neighbor apparently lent casino money Hong asked for.
Then he turned around and said the only reason he could gamble and lose all the money was because of his neighbor.
“It was because of him that I gambled. I’m financially ruined. He is doing fine. I am the only one suffering. ” said Hong at the police station. There were no casualties, but two sets of vendor stands were burnt down.
In another case involving Kangwonland, a 35-year-old Jeon was arrested for stealing 4.2 million won in cash and valuables.
He needed some gambling money. He had already blown 50 million won gambling at the casino.
Jeon went there 11 times. He worked at a factory and got fired.
After that his stealing began. It was for gambling money and living expenses.
He went around Gositel or commercial dormitories where people study for state-run exams for higher office, PC rooms, and stole cell phones and cash worth 1.5 million won.
