SEGAMAT: The cause of the Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) fire that took six lives and injured 11 others was the capacitor of one of the ceiling lights.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the fire was caused by a spark in the capacitor, which then came into contact with some combustible materials on the floor.
“That caused the blaze to spread to the rest of the block,” he told a press conference after handing out various equipment to low income earners under the 1Azam programme in Taman Yayasan here yesterday.
He said the cause was revealed in the investigation reports submitted by various agencies including the Fire and Rescue Department, Works Department and Energy Commission after the Oct 25 fire that broke out in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
The 9am fire caused the hospital block to be shut down temporarily to make way for investigations and ongoing repair works.
Following the incident, more than 400 patients from HSA were transferred to various government hospitals in here as well as in Kulai, Kluang and Mersing.
Subramaniam said the closed down HSA block would be up and running once the repair work is completed within six months.
“The independent commission formed to investigate the fire will analyse the reports to look at ways to overcome the weaknesses in the hospital’s overall system,” he added.
