A POLITICIAN in Tamil Nadu set himself on fire after conducting prayers for the state Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to recover from a recent illness, Makkal Osai reported.
She has been hospitalised with an unspecified illness for more than three weeks, leaving party supporters in a frenzy.
Several days ago, a district branch in Kumbakonam held a prayer ceremony for her recovery.
Local councillor Mogan Kumar, who took part in the ceremony, unexpectedly set himself on fire after pouring petrol over himself.
He was admitted to the hospital with severe burns.
In the meantime, police have started taking action against those circulating rumours online about Jayalalithaa’s condition.
Four people have been arrested so far.
> A 15-year-old boy was arrested in Seremban after committing two thefts within the same day, Makkal Osai reported.
He was caught red-handed by a restaurant owner while trying to steal money, but was let off with a reprimand from the owner.
The boy then stole cash from a vegetable seller in a Seremban market.
Several market workers who were alerted to the theft caught him.
The boy is now in police custody.
