Papuan football legend killed in house fire
Updated: 2017-02-20 13:47

Hengky Rumere, 70, the former Persipura soccer club player and national team player in the 1970s, has been found burned to death after his house in Kotaraja, Jayapura, Papua, caught fire at roughly 5:30 a.m., local time, on Sunday.

His body was found on his bed by firefighters who arrived at the house at 6:30 a.m. and promptly extinguished the fire.

Hengky and his family together lived in the round Dutch colonial house made of iron.

Papua Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. AM Kamal said his office received a report on the fire from a member of the family, Yohanes Rumere, 31, who spotted the fire in Hengky’s room. He tried to locate Hengky but failed.

“He went out of the house, seeking help. Locals helped extinguish the fire that had already burned up parts of the house,” Kamal said.

Hengky’s remains were taken to the local Bhayangkara Hospital for further examination.

Jayapura Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Tober Sirait said the police were still investigating the cause of the fire.

After retiring as a player, Hengky coached Persipura and other soccer clubs in Jayapura. (bbs)
