ANANTAPUR: About 40 passengers of a high-end bus had a miraculous escape after it caught fire at Timmampet village of Garladinne mandal in Anantapur district in the early hours of Sunday. The bus was proceeding to Kozhikode in Kerala from Hyderabad when the mishap occurred. The police said the bus belonged to a private travel agency in Kerala. No one was injured in the mishap thanks to the alert driver.

The police said the driver stopped the bus near Timmampet village to enable a passenger to answer the call of nature. Meanwhile, the driver noticed smoke and sparks in the bus and alerted the passengers to get down. The bus was in flames soon after the passengers had alighted. It is suspected that electric short circuit had led to the fire. The bus was nearly reduced to ashes. Local police sub-inspector Srinivasulu made alternative arrangements to send the stranded passengers to their destination. Traffic on the busy Hyderabad-Bangalore national highway was affected for about an hour following the accident.

AP civil supplies minister Paritala Sunitha, who was returning to Anantapur after attending the state cabinet meeting in Vijayawada, stopped at the accident site and supervised the arrangements to send the passengers to Kerala.
