Sacked contract employee sets Gulbarga University library on fire

KALABURAGI: A sacked contract employee of Gulbarga University was arrested on Wednesday for setting the varsity’s library building on fire late on Tuesday night. Thousands of books worth several lakhs have been burnt in the incident which happened just two days prior to the university’s convocation.
Police nabbed the accused Shivkumar Pattedar, a resident of Kusanoor village, with the help of CCTV footage which showed him wandering near the library building on Tuesday night. Police had also taken Anil Doddamani, Shivkumar’s friend, into custody for his suspected involvement in the incident. However, they let him off in the evening. On Wednesday morning, hostel inmates noticed thick smoke billowing from the library building and immediately informed police who along with fire depoartment personnel rushed to the spot. It took them two hours to douse the fire.
Sub-inspector Raghavendra of the University police station said that Shivkumar worked as an attender in the library on a contract basis and was sacked a couple of months ago for his inefficiency. Shivakumar wanted to avenge his sacking. He gained entry into the library through a window after climbing a tree beside the building and set the books on fire, he added.
