MUMBAI: A woman died while her father and elder brother suffered burns on Tuesday after a fire erupted in their flat on the 9th floor of Shivam Tower at Nahar Amrit Shakti complex in Sakinaka.
The fire broke out in Nandalal Bharvani’s (65) flat at around 4pm when he and daughter Chetana (35) were at home. The police rushed to the spot on receiving a fire alarm and carried out rescue operations before the fire brigade reached the spot and brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes.
When police reached the spot, several people living in the 13-storied building has rushed downstairs, while those trapped on the 9th floor and above were helped by police to reach the terrace. “The woman suffered burns and died due to suffocation after she was rushed to hospital. The cause of fire is yet to be known and the fire brigade report is awaited,” said Sakinaka senior inspector Avinash Dharmadhikari.
At the time of the incident, Nandalal’s wife had gone to the market and his son Tarun (38) had gone to the bank. Residents said Tarun rushed to the flat. “Somehow, Tarun managed to reach the 9th floor and rescued his father, who is handicapped but who managed to open the door. His sister was in the bedroom and was suffocated,” a resident told TOI.
