Updated: 2016-09-22 15:31
The father who was set on fire allegedly by his teenage son six days ago for refusing to buy him a new motorcycle died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.
ATM Rafikul Huda, 48, of Kamalapur DIB Bottola of Faridpur town, was declared dead around 4:00pm, said his brother ATM Sirajul Huda.
Police said they were trying to arrest the alleged killer, Fardin, a first-year student of Government Rajendra College in Faridpur.
Akram Uddin Ahamad, the victim’s brother-in-law, filed a murder case against Fardin, 17, with Faridpur Kotwali Police Station yesterday.
Quoting the case statement, Akram said Fardin had demanded a new motorcycle from his father, a businessman, a few days ago, but a refusal left him furious.
On Thursday afternoon, he allegedly splashed petrol on Rafikul who was smoking in a room of their house at that time. The victim caught fire instantly, and Fardin fled.
Hearing screams, neighbours rushed in, doused the fire and took critically injured Rafiqul and his wife Silvia Huda, who was also in the room, to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Doctors released Silvia after giving her primary treatment but referred Rafiqul to the DMCH.
Rafikul’s brother Sirajul said Fardin’s behaviour had been erratic since his early high school days. “He had become a drug addict.”
Rafikul was the younger brother of former chief election commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda, said family members.
