Plastic factory loses over RM15mil to enormous blaze
Updated: 2017-05-10 12:00
BUKIT MERTAJAM: A plastic factory in the Bukit Minyak Light Industrial Park lost more than RM15mil after a fire razed almost the entire building.
At the height of the blaze, thick, black smoke could be seen billowing up into the sky and was visible from some 5km away in Seberang Jaya and Batu Kawan.
State Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Mohd Shukri Hamzah said the department got the call at 11.15am yesterday.
“The fire was put under control at 12.43pm. About 80% of the factory was destroyed,” he said.
Mohd Shukri said almost 200 firemen and voluntary firemen faced difficulties controlling the fire as the factory was surrounded by hazardous chemicals belonging to neighbouring factories and warehouses.
“The situation was quite dangerous and the water pressure was also low,” he said.
“A water tanker from the Sungai Bakap fire station had to be called in to provide additional supply.”
Mohd Sukri said losses were estimated to be at least RM15mil, as several machines were also destroyed in the fire.
“According to a security guard, the fire was triggered by a faulty machine.
“We are still investigating the cause,” he said, adding that no casualties were reported.
