Baby dies in blaze at workers’ quarters

KOTA KINABALU: An 11-month-old baby girl perished in a fire that razed a workers’ quarters in central Beluran while her parents suffered burns.
The remains of the girl, identified as Ainur Jiman, was recovered from the gutted longhouse by policemen.
Her parents, Jiman Alimuddin, 25, and his wife Adittri Rahman, 24, both foreign workers, are being treated at the Pitas district hospital.
They had apparently tried to rescue the child who was sleeping when the fire broke out late Wednesday night.
A Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman said the department had received a distress call from a woman on the fire at Maridian Plantation Sendirian Berhad in Tangkarason estate at around 8.45am on Thursday.
The woman informed them that a baby had died and her parents had suffered injuries in the fire.
He said a team was immediately dispatched to the area, which is about 217km from Kinabantangan town and seven hours by 4WD vehicle.
The baby’s remains were sent by police to the Pitas hospital at 2pm Thursday for a postmortem.
