Car catches fire in Clementi; no one hurt
Updated: 2017-06-03 05:00

A car caught fire along Clementi Road yesterday afternoon, but no one was injured.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 1.07pm.

The blackened remains of a grey Mitsubishi car were seen near the junction of Clementi Road and Clementi Avenue 2.

It is understood that the car collided with a tipper truck before bursting into flames.

Freelance photographer Debby Chua, 45, was driving along Clementi Road when she saw thick smoke at the accident scene.

“I thought there could have been a fire at a nearby school or residential area as the thick black smoke kept rising into the air,” she said. “I’m relieved that no one was injured.”

The fire involved the engine compartment of the car, and was extinguished by SCDF personnel using two water jets.

The SCDF dispatched a fire bike and two fire engines to the scene.

There has been a spate of fires recently.

On May 16 alone, the SCDF dealt with at least three fires – at a construction site in Punggol Field, Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 and a condominium in Woodlands.

There have also been at least four other fires since May 20, three of which involved cars.
