Boy dies in dumpsite guardhouse fire

LANGKAWI: An eight-year-old boy was killed when a fire tore through a guardhouse located at a dumpsite in Jalan Bukit Tembok, Kilim here early Thursday.
It is learnt that the father was on duty and the boy was with him when the fire broke out at 3.05am.
The father managed to escape with light injuries to his head, but the boy, who was asleep at the time, was trapped in the guardhouse.
Langkawi Fire and Rescue Department chief Comm Fadzlullah Mohd Noor said they received a distress call at about 3.10am and rushed a team to the scene.
“Sixteen men and two fire engines from the Langkawi fire station were despatched, he said, adding that they managed to douse the flames at 3.33am.
Comm Fadzlullah said the guardhouse was 70% destroyed and the boy’s charred remains were found inside.
He added that the body was handed over to the police for further investigation and the father, who is in his 40s, was sent to the hospital for treatment.
The cause of fire is still being investigated.
