IPOH: They tried to escape from the raging fire but the thick smoke and heat proved too much for a mother and her daughter.
The Thai national, who worked as a rubber tapper, and her schoolgirl daughter, were killed when their home caught fire at around 3.30am yesterday in Gerik, Hulu Perak.
Their bodies were found by Fire and Rescue Department officers at the top floor of the house.
Gerik OCPD Superintendant Ismail Che Isa said the blaze started from the ground floor.
Based on eyewitnesses’ account, he said the two victims had shouted for help.
Apparently, they had tried to come out but the heat and smoke prevented them from unlocking the door to flee. It is believed that they then ran upstairs.
Their bodies were sent to Hospital Gerik for post mortem, said Supt Ismail.
Perak Fire and Rescue department director Datuk Yahaya Madis said they received a distress call at 3.33am and ended the operation at 4.20am.
“By the time our vehicles arrived, the fire was almost out.
“We found the bodies of both victims in a room on the first floor,” he said.
