Man sets wife ablaze for denying divorce

FARIDABAD: A man set his wife on fire in Mujesar area on Sunday afternoon after she refused to divorce him. The victim, identified as Malti, has suffered 55-60 per cent burn injuries and is still critical. She has been referred to Safdarjung Hospital, said investigating officer Vinod Godara.
Three teams have been formed to nab the accused, identified as Meharchand, said SHO Gajendra Singh.
The couple had a court marriage in August 2012, said police. But the relationship turned sour and Malti left Meherchand to live with her parents.
On Sunday around 2pm, she was alone at her parent’s house when Meherchand visited her, said Malti in her statement. He asked her to sign divorce papers in exchange of Rs 3 lakh. When she refused, he forcefully took her inside a room. He then poured kerosene on her and around the room before striking a matchstick. He locked the door from outside and fled.
On hearing her shouts, the neighbours came to her help. They doused the fire and took her to a hospital.
A case has been registered under the provisions of 307 and 427 of IPC on the charges of attempt to murder and damaging property against Meherchand.
Meherchand asked Malti to sign divorce papers in exchange of 3 lakh, but she said no.
