SUNGAI PETANI: Hari Raya celebrations for four families at Taman Ria were cut short when their homes, two cars and 12 motorcycles went up in flames.
Housewife Azizah Bahari, 59, said her family of six was away in Taiping, Perak, when the fire started at about 1am yesterday.
“We rushed back when a neighbour called us about the fire. We reached home about two hours later, only to see our house razed.
“Also destroyed were my husband’s five antique Vespa scooters,” she said, adding that they were now putting up at their son’s place in Bandar Puteri Jaya.
Another house owner, Mat Nasir Hassan, 55, said he had just returned home from Ipoh, Perak, about 30 minutes before the incident.
“I was in the bathroom taking a shower when I heard shouts of ‘fire’. I ran out wearing only a towel and started to move my two cars out of the house. The fire spread so quickly that I was unable to save my two motorcycles,” he said.
Damage caused by the blaze has been estimated at about RM500,000.
Sungai Petani Fire and Rescue station chief Mohd Ridzuan Nut Jamudin said witnesses heard a loud explosion and then saw the flames which raged quickly through the four houses.
“Our swift action prevented the fire from spreading to more houses,” said Mohd Ridzuan.
