Updated: 2013-01-29-23:13

DAMAK: A massive fire today swept through the Baldangi-based Bhutanese refugee camp in Jhapa, destroying hundreds of huts, police said.

While the fire reduced to dust 60 huts, other 50 huts had to be pulled down to prevent further spread of the fire. According to police, details of the damage wrought by the fire are yet to be confirmed.

The raging fire was doused at about 2pm with the assistance from fire brigades from Damak, Bhadrapur and Itahari aided by the Armed Police Force and Nepal Police personnel and locals. According to Sub Inspector Ganesh Bhattarai of the Area Police office of Damak, the blaze had started from Nara Bahadur Khapangi’s hut in Sector B, in the refugee camp in Beldangi.

Police said no human casualty is reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, the World Food Programme has provided food for two days to the fire victims’. Jhapa Assistant CDO Yogendra Dulal, Jhapa SP Sher Bahadur Basnet and other security chiefs had come to the refugee camps to take stock of the situation.
