Vehicles razed in hotel fire
Updated: 2017-08-09

GUESTS of a hotel in Siam Road, Penang, fled the building when a fire in its storeroom triggered the alarm.
Many of them rushed out of their rooms in their pyjamas in the incident which occurred at about 4.30am yesterday.
A hotel employee, who declined to be named, said the fire damaged two cars belonging to guests that were parked in an empty space behind the hotel.
“Luckily, the blaze did not affect our guest rooms and our hotel was not fully occupied,” she said, adding that the hotel was awaiting the final report from the Fire Department on the cause of the blaze.
The fire also destroyed 26 motorcycles parked in the alley behind the hotel.
The motorcycles belonged to a motorcycle repair shop next door.
A worker of the shop, who also refused to be named, said the motorcycles were parked behind the hotel’s storeroom, with the permission of the hotel management.
“Most of them were damaged in road accidents and have been stored there for years. We kept the motorcycles for their parts,” he said, adding that he was unable to estimate the losses.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Mohd Azman Hussin said the department received the distress call at 4.35am.
“A total of 21 firemen were deployed to the scene and we managed to control the fire in nine minutes after arriving at the scene at 4.49am.
“The fire was completely put out at 6.06am and no casualty was reported,” he said in a statement.
