Fire engulfs godown in Juhi
Updated: 2013-02-10-06:12
KANPUR: Fire broke out in a scrap godown in Rattupurwa area in Juhi on Saturday. Three fire tenders rushed there to douse the flames.
Plastic products, metal wires and paper created a huge fireball which could be seen from as far as Parampurwa. It took more than two hours to bring the blaze under control. Mahesh, a security guard of transport agency, opposite the godown, said he saw smoke emanating from the scrap godown. “Initially, nobody bothered but suddenly it became huge. There were columns of flame leaping up to nine feet. We alerted the fire office,” Mahesh said.
The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.Local residents alleged that the godown, with tonnes of metal and plastic in its backyard, ignored fire safety norms, which left nearby houses vulnerable.”This is the third fire mishap in a year. The owner of the godown neither follows fire norms, nor clears the scrap. We have written to district administration on the matter, but nothing has happened so far,” said Dushyant, a local resident, who claimed his entire house was engulfed in smoke when the fire broke out.
Accident death: A 13-year-old girl died in a road accident on national highway near Rasdhan village in Kanpur Dehat on Saturday. The girl identified as Kajal, daughter of Ishwari Prasad, came under the wheels of an SUV while she was trying to cross the road. The driver sped away. The villagers rushed the injured girl to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead. The residents blocked the road for two hours. The Sikandara police reached the spot and pacified the crowd.
