One Dead Four Injured In Fire At Chemical Factory

BUTTERWORTH, March 25 (Bernama) — A supervisor perished while four other workers suffered burns and injuries during a fire at a chemical factory, Peter Grevent Asia Sdn Bhd, at the Perai Industrial zone, here, today.

 

Penang Fire and Rescue Department’s Investigation division deputy director Mohamadul Ehsan Mohd Zain said the victim, Roslan Othman, 40, died of 50 percent burns and suffocation due to thick smoke.

 

The injured were Baharin Arsad, 49 and Jamaluludin Ismail, 39, both supervisors and production operator K. Ramis, 41 and a Bangladeshi worker identified only as Mostak.

 

They received treatment at the Seberang Jaya Hospital (SHJ), here.

 

During the 11.40am incident, the victims were working in the production section of the factory which was situated in the third floor of the four-storey factory outlet.

 

Mohamadul Ehsan said upon receiving a distress call at 11.40am, seven fire engines from Balai Perai, Perda, Jalan Perak and Butterworth were deployed to the location with 48 fire fighters.

 

He said 80 percent of the factory was damaged but the cause of the fire and estimated losses would be investigated.
