270 Made Homeless In Longhouse Fire

SIBU, Sept 5 (Bernama) — A fire Thursday left homeless 270 people of a 30- door longhouse in Nanga Sekuau, about 45km from here.
No casualties were reported in the fire which occurred at about 10.30 am at the Nyelayang Jamban Longhouse, said a statement from the Operations Room of the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department.
Two teams of firemen from the Sibu Central station and the Sungai Merah station rushed there in three trucks after being summoned.
Most of the occupants were away during the fire.
A witness, Mara anak Kasau, from a neighbouring longhouse, Andrewson Ngelai, said she spotted the fire when she was hanging out clothes to dry and immediately alerted the neighbours.
This is the third fire at a longhouse in Sibu this year.
On Aug 1, ten families were made homeless in a fire which partially destroyed the Franky Bawok Longhouse in Rantau Panjang, about 22km from Sibu.
On Aug 18, some 200 people of the Das anak Jerman Longhouse in Stapang, about 40 km away, lost their 40-door dwelling to a fire.
