Girl Dies In House Fire

Updated: 2014021712:00

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Feb 17 (Bernama) — A two-year-old girl was killed when a fire swept through a house in Jalan Rozhan, Cheruk Tok Kun here Monday.

The charred remains of Nurul Adryana Lateesya Mohammad Asyri were found in a room on the ground floor the two-storey wooden house.

The girl’s grandmother and brother, Danial Mukhriz, 4, managed to escape the 11am fire which engulfed the entire house, said Penang Fire and Rescue Department director Azmi Tamat.

He said 25 firemen with three engines from the Perai Fire and Rescue Station took about 20 minutes to douse the fire upon arrival.

The cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained.

The victim’s grandmother, Siti Zanyah Yaakob, 74, said she was performing the duha (mid-morning) prayer in the same room with Nurul Adryana Lateesya and Danial Mukhriz when she smelled something burning.

“I stopped my prayer and went out of the room to check. To my horror, I saw the flames near the staircase.

“I rushed out of the house with Danial Mukhriz. I only realised that Nurul Adryana Lateesya was not with us when Danial told me that she was still in the house. We tried to get back into the house but were beaten back by the heat,” she said.

Siti Zanyah said her husband and the parents of the children were away at work while two other grandchildren were at school.

The parents of the victim, Siti Salwani Othman, 28, and Mohammad Asyri Zakaria, 30, refused to speak to reporters at the scene.

The couple has four children, including a boy, aged between two and seven, and Nurul Adryana Lateesya was the youngest of the siblings.

Penang Zakat chairman Datuk Mohd Salleh Man visited the family and handed over a donation.
