Updated: 2014–02–22–12:00
GEORGE TOWN, Feb 22 (Bernama) — The mangrove forest measuring 3.2 hectares in Kampung Bakau Tua, Penaga near here was razed by fire at around noon today.
Kuala Muda fire and rescue station operation chief Yusmin Mohd Yusoff said the blaze could only be put out completely at 7.30 pm.
“The dry soil and overlapping trees also caused the fire to spread quickly even to the land surface, especially with the current hot weather and wind factors,” he told Bernama when contacted here today.
He said two fire engines with 12 crew were rushed to the scene after receiving the distress call at 12.04 pm.
The actual cause of fire is still being investigated.
Yusmin also advised the public not to conduct any open burning activity, especially near bush and forest area during this dry season.
