BESUT, March 1 (Bernama) — Fire struck an automobile workshop early today, destroying a car and a four-wheel drive vehicle, motorcycle and car accessories in Kampung Beting Lintang near here.
Total losses caused by the 1.30am blaze were estimated at about RM100,000.( 30,515$:1MYR=0.305157USD,03/19 rate)
Workshop owner Tan Kian Joo had a narrow escape when a burning roof collapsed, barely minutes after he had driven the two vehicles out of the premises.
Narrating the incident, he said he was asleep at home when he was awakened by loud explosions – believed to have been caused by overheated drums of lubricating oil – coming from the direction of the workshop nearby.
“When I emerged from the house, the workshop which I opened about six years ago, was engulfed in flames.
“Nevertheless, I was able to salvage a Proton Wira and a four-wheel drive vehicle which were sent to my workshop for repairs.
“Despite the heat from the flames, I steeled myself to enter the workshop and drive them (vehicles) out. Just as I had driven the second vehicle out, the roof of the workshop collapsed.
“I then alerted my family to vacate our house, in case the fire spread,” Tan told reporters here.
Six firemen in an engine from the Besut Fire and Rescue Department prevented the blaze from spreading to other buildings in the area.
