Three people, including two children, were burnt to death after a fire razed dozens of densely-located shanties in the capital’s Kamrangirchar yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Ananya Hossain Kathak, 7; Ferdaus Alam, 12; and Zainal Abedin, 65, said fire service sources.
The fire originated from an electric short circuit in a tin-shed house in Kalunagar Beribadh area around 2:20am and spread to dozens of adjoining shanties, said the sources.
Around 80 shanties, including eight shops, were gutted before 10 fire fighting units doused the fire around 3:30am, said the sources.
Maulana Ilyas, teacher of the Jamia Ubaydia Madinatul Ulum Madrasa, said he and two teachers along with the children were sleeping when the fire broke out.
The entrance to the madrasa was blocked off by the fire and Ananya and Ferdaus went missing while they were rushing to make it out over the roof through the back, he said.
Meanwhile, Zainal was sleeping in his son’s tin-shed house after locking it from inside for fear of thieves and in the rush every one forgot about him, said Md Zamal, nephew of the victim.
Fire fighters later recovered the three charred bodies.
