BIRATNAGAR: As many as 90 houses belonging to 38 families were reduced to ashes after a fire triggered by an electric short circuit swept through the Lamaha Tole in Govindpur, Morang, today.
Police said the fire started at about 10am from the house of a local, Rupali Miyan. According to Morang Superintendent of Police Niraj Bahadur Shahi, property worth Rs 15 million was gutted before the fire was brought under control after almost six hours.
“The fire caused a huge damage as most of the houses had thatched roof,” said SP Shahi, adding that fire brigades from Biratnagar, Itahari and Inaruwa, with the help of Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel and locals did their bit to douse the fire and rescue the trapped families.
“We were all preparing to celebrate Holi. We had no inkling of what was in the offing,” said 62-year-old Kaiyum Miyan, wondering how he would manage shelter and food for the family.
“I had gone to the field with my oxen after having morning meal. When I returned the house had already been reduced to ashes,” rued Shenaj Ansari. The fire site is 40 km east of Biratnagar.
