COTABATO CITY, Philippines – Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Mujiv Hataman ordered Tuesday the ARMM’s social welfare department to help 95 students displaced in a dawn fire that razed a ladies dormitory of the state-run Mindanao State University in Marawi City.
MSU officials said about 30 of the victims were injured when they jumped from second floor of the dormitory to escape the fire, which began past 2:00 a.m. over the weekend.
Hataman, who presided over a regional cabinet meeting in Lamitan City Tuesday morning, said he has asked ARMM Vice Gov. Bainon Karon, concurrent social welfare secretary of the region, to provide assistance to the 95 affected students.
The ARMM’s health secretary, physician Kadil Sinolinding Jr., said emergency teams from the Lanao del Sur provincial health office are now providing services to the injured students.
MSU officials said the fire that razed the ground floor of the Princess Lawanen ladies’ dormitory destroyed 17 rooms occupied by 68 students, mostly from towns in the ARMM’s adjoining Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur provinces.
The dormitory is the oldest in the MSU campus.
The students have been relocated to other dormitories in the university premises.
Hataman, chairman of the ARMM’s inter-agency disaster council, said the regional social welfare department has also informed the students’ parents about the incident.
Arson probers said faulty wiring could have caused the fire.
