600 families lose homes in QC fire
Updated: 2012-10-23-05:02
At least 600 families lost their homes in a fire that razed 400 houses in a residential area in Quezon City Tuesday afternoon.
The fire at Sangandaan village in Quezon City reached the fifth alarm before firefighters were able to get it under control at 4:30 p.m., radio dzBB’s Rowena Salvacion reported.
Investigators are verifying information that the fire started at a house in which children were playing with matches and candles while their parent was at work.
Neighbors managed to rescue the children from the burning house, the report said.
However, at least two residents sustained injuries in the foot, while residents beat up a man they accused of trying to steal electrical wires while the fire was in progress.
Barangay Sangandaan chairman Juan Untalan was quoted in the report as saying at least 400 of the 500 houses in the area were razed.
Untalan added 600 families were affected and were brought to the Ismael Mathay Sr. High School, GSIS Elementary School, and a covered court.
Earlier, Quezon City fire marshal Senior Superintendent Bobby Baruelo said the fire reached the fifth alarm, with firefighters having difficulty battling the blaze because of the narrow streets.
Many residents tried to save their belongings, while some could only cry while seeing their houses razed. — BM, GMA News
