Updated: 2014-02-16-04:27
An eight-year-old boy was killed in a fire that hit a highly populated residential area near a public market in Iloilo City Saturday.
Also, seven houses were destroyed while two others were damaged in the fire that started at 7:45 a.m. at Barangay Rizal Pala-Pala Zone 1, near the Iloilo South Terminal Market, the Philippines News Agency reported.
According to the report, the boy and his aunt were asleep inside their home, one of the houses that was razed, when the fire broke out.
Unlike the fatality, the aunt was able to rapidly exit the house.
A police officer assigned at the Iloilo City Police Office, SPO2 Nono Loa, was among the residents who lost their homes to the fire.
Firefighters who responded to the scene had a hard time getting to the area due to narrow streets. The fire also spread quickly as the houses in the area were made of light materials.
The fire was put out at 9:20 a.m. — DVM, GMA News
