SARLAHI: Life in as many as 22 Tarai districts was largely affected due to Tarai-Madhes bandh called by Sadbhavana party today, with its 10-point demand, including declaration of poll date.
Bandh enforcers set a heavy truck ablaze at Nawalpur road section in Sarlahi. According to Truck driver Mohammad Gafur Miya, a group of nine persons intercepted the truck, en route to Jaleswor from Birgunj, and set it on fire.
Police said they had to use force to disperse SP cadres led by central member Rajaram Paswan in Nawalpur. The agitators had set the truck ablaze after police arrested nine party cadres including Paswan. They also smashed the windows of four buses.
At a corner meet in Nawalpur chowk, SP leaders accused the police of using excessive force and injuring party cadres. SP Sharad Chand said arrested cadres are in police custody and that details of the damage were yet to be ascertained.
Police nabbed nine cadres, including Sadbhavana Party central member Nejamuddin Samani from Ghantaghar chowk in Birgunj.
Life was thrown out of gear in Dhanusha, Bara, Mahottari, and Rautahat, among others. Long and short route buses stayed off the road, while market places, and businesses were closed.
