Fire before fireworks at Chinnaswamy

BANGALORE: A minor fire broke out barely 15 minutes before the start of the game between Bangalore and Kolkata at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Thankfully, the stadium was equipped with adequate number of fire extinguishers and it took around 15 minutes to douse the fire.
A thick cloud of black smoke that rose in the air drove back the spectators from the front rows of the packed gallery. It would have helped had the generator, which apparently malfunctioned, been switched off when the fire broke out, but that did not happen immediately, leading to tense moments before the match.
Once the fire was put out, Bangalore team owner Vijay Mallya, KSCA president Anil Kumble and secretary Javagal Srinath, walked up to inspect the scene even as the Bangalore players hung around in front of the pavilion waiting to take the field.
But it was only after match referee Raju Mukherjee was convinced that the situation was safe that an announcement was made that the match would start at 4.20 pm, instead of the scheduled 4pm.
