Quick thinking driver saves lives

TAIPING: Quick thinking by a bus driver saved the lives of passengers of an express bus, which caught fire at KM200 of the North-South Expressway in Kamunting near here.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the driver promptly stopped the vehicle and directed his passengers to alight from the double-decker bus after smelling and seeing thick smoke from one of the tyres.
The passengers, who were on their way to Kuala Lumpur from Butterworth at the time of the 1.30am incident, were taken to the nearest rest area while firemen put out the fire, he said.
He added that it took firemen more than two hours to put out the fire, which destroyed 70% of the vehicle.
