Fire destroys KK secondary school’s hostel block

KOTA KINABALU: A hostel block which houses more than a hundred SMK Peter Mojuntin students here was destroyed in a fire that broke out at about 7.20am Monday.
The fire completely destroyed five hostel rooms on the upper floor of the double-storey building.
Six rooms, including the warden’s bedroom on the lower floor, was saved after firemen got the fire under control and prevented it from spreading.
The six rooms, however, have been declared unsafe for use.
Operations chief Hamsa Isnurdini said no one was injured in the incident as school staff managed to get students to safety.
“No one was at the top floor during the incident as they were all at the school assembly earlier,” he said.
He said there were some afternoon session students on the lower floor but all managed escape to safety.
He said firemen from the Penampang, Lintas and Kota Kinabalu fire stations brought the fire under control at about 8.07am.
Sabah Education Department director Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul said the affected students would be placed at another building until repair works are complete.
“We will make sure their needs, including beds and pillows, are seen to,” she said, and urged anyone who could provide help to do so.
