Fire burns factories, store in Old Dhaka
Updated: 2019-03-23
A bangle factory in Old Dhaka’s Shahid Nagar has caught fire.
The factory caught fire around 10pm on Saturday. Within moments, the flames spread to nearby shops and houses.
Seven units of the fire service brought the flames under control around 11pm, said an official at the service’s control room.By then, nearly 18 shops and structures had been burnt down, said Lalbagh Police Inspector (Investigation) Khandaker Helaluddin.
Of the semi-concrete structures affected by the fire, six bangle factories, two autorickshaw garages, a mess and a hardware and electronics store were destroyed in the fire, he added.
The electronics store was a showroom of Walton, said Inspector Helaluddin.
An electrical failure at the bangle factory is believed to have caused the fire, said Abdul Halim, deputy assistant director
of the fire service.
But the source of the flame will be confirmed after a probe, he added.
There have been no reports of injuries or casualties in the incident though a person fell ill after inhaling smoke.
A devastating fire killed 71 people in OldDhaka’s Chawkbazar on Feb 20.
The flames were fuelled by the presence of flammables and chemical warehouses in the vicinity, according to the fire service.
A similar incident occurred in Old Dhaka’s Nimtaliin 2010 when a plastic factory caught fire, leaving 125 people dead.
