NAGAPATTINAM: Two people sustained injuries after the personal security officer (PSO) of Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam mutt first opened fire at them and thereafter in the air near the mutt at Aduthurai in Nagapattinam district on Sunday night.
The incident happened following an altercation between the PSO and some residents of Thiruvavaduthurai at a petty shop.
Jethan Raj, 27, of the armed reserve police in Nagapattinam, had been posted as the personal security officer for Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam mutt head Ambalavana Desiga Paramacharya Swamigal.
He was on his way back to his room in the town after duty when he stopped by at the petty shop in West Street. Kuthalam Police said a person called V Mathi, 47, picked up an argument with Raj but things got out of hand when Raj took out his gun and shot Mathi on his left foot.
S Selvaraj, 41, who witnessed the incident, confronted the PSO and warned him of severe action. To his horror, an irate Raj aimed his gun at Selvaraj.
Sensing danger, he started running but Raj chased him down and fired at his left leg. Subsequently, Mathivanan, who was watching the proceedings, tried to stop Raj who however beat him with his gun. The high voltage action came to an end with Raj firing in the air to warn others.
On being alerted, Kuthalam police rushed to the spot and caught Raj. They also recovered the gun. Nagappattinam superintendent of police C Vijayakumar visited the spot and conducted an inquiry. The police sources said that the incident was the fallout of a verbal duel between Raj and Mathi over a trivial issue.
All the injured people were rushed to the government hospital in Mayiladuthurai from where they were referred to government medical college hospital, Tiruvarur.
Kuthalam police booked Raj under section 307 of The Arms Act and arrested him while the Mayiladuthurai judicial magistrate remanded him in judicial custody.
