Two onlookers injured as Tamil Nadu cop opens fire on man during quarrel

NAGAPATTINAM: Two people sustained injuries when an armed force policeman fired from his gun after an altercation with a resident of Thiruvavaduthurai in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday night.
According to police, Jethan Raja, 27, from armed force, had been posted as personal security officer for Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam mutt head Ambalavana Desiga Paramacharya Swamigal. Raj is a native of Dindigul.
After his duty hours on Sunday, Raj was returning to his room located at Thiruvavaduthurai town. On the way, he went to a petti shop to buy something and started to chat with Mathivanan, a resident. Soon an argument broke out between them. In a fit of rage, Raj fired in the air from his gun to warn Mathivanan.
Later, he aimed at one of legs of Mathivanan and fired two more rounds. However, nothing happened to Mathivanan. Instead two onlookers — S Selvaraj, 41, and V Mathi, 46 – suffered bullet injuries on their legs.
The injured were rushed to Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital, from there they were referred to Government Medical College Hospital, Tiruvarur.
The Kuthalam police recovered the gun from Jethan Raj.
Superintendent of police C Vijayakumar and his team visited the spot and conducted an inquiry.
