Updated: 2019–05–06
GHAZIABAD: A paper recycling and manufacturing factory in Mohan Nagar was gutted in a fire that broke out on Sunday. However, no casualties were reported after the blaze.
As many as nine fire tenders were rushed to the spot and it took them over six hours to bring the fire in the factory under control. Around 11am on Sunday, the fire broke out at Ashoka Pulp and Paper Pvt Ltd, located on Loni road industrial area in Mohan Nagar, police said. The cause of the fire is not known yet, they said.
Initially, some locals tried to douse the fire, but it quickly spread in several parts of the factory, which is spread in a 27,000 square-metre area.
Shiv Kumar, the owner of the factory, said he received information about the fire around 12 pm. Kumar, a resident of Preet Vihar in Delhi, reached the spot and called the fire services.
Sunil Kumar Singh, chief fire officer (Ghaziabad), said the department received information at 12.25pm. “We immediately sent seven fire tenders to the spot. Two additional fire tenders were also pressed into service,” Singh said. He added, “Heaps of papers kept in the open within the premises had caught fire. The blaze was brought under the control in a few hours.”
According to Shiv, the factory, which is 19 years old, was not in operation for the past five to six months. He said the fire could have started due to “intense hot weather”.
“Altogether, there has been a minimum loss of Rs 40-50 lakh. However, the exact amount will be known after the final assessment. I had got possession of the factory last week because of some litigations in the court,” he added.
Kumar said that four excavators and an equal number of fire tenders continued to remove debris and extinguish the fire underneath the heaps of paper for a few hours.
