Man alleges murder attempt after fire in flat

GHAZIABAD: A 37-year-old man on Sunday filed a complaint against unidentified persons for allegedly setting his flat on fire in Mahagun Puram Society here, police said.
Prasoon Srivastav, an IT firm employee in Delhi, said the incident happened in the wee hours of Sunday. Along with him, his wife Bholi Srivastav (36) and their 5-year-old daughter Prathama were present at that time on the 16th floor of Gayatri Tower, police said.
“I am also going to contest the society elections and there is a high probability that someone in the colony has committed the crime. An inquiry revealed that CCTV cameras of my tower were not working since Saturday evening,” he said.
He claimed to have found a plastic bottle filled with kerosene or petrol outside his flat.
Around 2.20am on Sunday, Bholi woke up due to a burning smell coming from the drawing room. She, along with Prasoon, then rushed to the spot only to see that it was filled with smoke, the police said.
The couple immediately contacted the maintenance office of the society and alerted their neighbours. “I tried to open the main door but the lock was very hot. We poured buckets of water to douse the blaze. The fire sprinkler in the corridor saved our lives. Initially, we thought it was a short circuit till we spotted the bottle,” Prasoon said. He then called the police control room. Following this, he filed a complaint at Kavi Nagar police station alleging an attempt to murder.
An FIR is yet to be registered in the case, police said.
