Fire breaks out in Ahmedabad paediatric hospital

AHMEDABAD: A fire broke out on the terrace of a four-storey building housing a paediatric hospital near Parimal Garden on Monday afternoon. The fire was caused by leakage from an LPG cylinder at the canteen on the terrace. Goods worth lakhs were gutted.
Civic body officials said that the canteen was being run illegally in the Apple Super-Specialty Hospital.
No casualty was reported but 10 newborn babies were evacuated and shifted to a private hospital in Naroda.
The blaze erupted in the fibre shed on the terrace of the Dev Complex building, that has the hospital on the fourth floor, an official of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) said. The canteen adjoins a sitting area which was unoccupied at the time of the accident.
The AFES doused the fire in half an hour. “The fibre shed caught fire, resulting in a lot of smoke in the premises,” chief fire officer M F Dastur said. “Two fire-fighting vehicles and four water tankers were deployed.” The fire stoked panic and a traffic jam built up as many people began shooting videos of the blaze on their cellphones. At the time, a team of traffic police was removing illegally parked vehicles from the area. The team controlled the situation, an onlooker said.
Deputy chief fire officer Rajesh Bhatt said that the estate department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) was asked to give a report on the legality of the canteen. Dr Parimal Desai, an ophthalmologist, said that he was operating on an elderly patient when he heard about the fire. “We evacuated the patient and rushed out of the hospital,” said Desai. Another doctor said that the builder of the complex told him that the occupants of Apple hospital had illegally opened the canteen on the terrace.
