KATHMANDU: A fire broke out at the Lazimpat-based Casino Shangri-La on the premises of Hotel Shangri-La today, leaving guests and employees panicked.
The fire erupted at around 4.15 pm, police said, adding that short circuit was to blame. Guests hurried out with their belongings as the fire engulfed part of the hotel building before Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Juddha Barun Yantra rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames and rescue people. DSP Chakra Bahadur Singh, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka, said the fire was taken under control by 6 pm. Around 300 firefighters backed by six fire engines were deployed. No one was injured in the incident.
A primary investigation suggests that the fire started from a store room in the casino. Police are yet to assess the losses but hotel and casino operators told them that the fire caused losses worth at least Rs 40 million.
Traffic had come to a grinding halt in and around Lazimpat as fire engines battled in their desperate bid to put out the blaze in peak hours.
