Updated: 2019–06–23
Six people died when fire broke out at their house in Bagong Silang, Caloocan City before dawn on Sunday, according to a report by Bernadette Reyes on GMA News TV’s Balitanghali.
The fatalities were identified as Maricel Roxas, her children RJ, Jaypee, Robert, and three-month old Niño, and their cousin Eduardo Peregrino.
The fire, which started at past 2 a.m., was believed to have been sparked by an unattended candle.
The victims were sleeping along with Benedict, the eldest child, when the fire broke out.
Benedict said the candle fell on top of carton boxes then the fire quickly spread.
He jumped from the second floor of the house to escape the fire.
Benedict was not able to save his relatives since the fire already engulfed their house which was made of light materials.
Pook leader Renato Caladiao said firemen had a hard time putting out the fire since the house was located far from the road.
The firemen had to put their hoses together to reach the burning house.
Hilma Roxas, a relative of the victims, said they were not able to go inside the house to save the family due to the extent of the fire.
The victims’ father Albert broke down when he saw the aftermath of the fire.
He said he was at work doing overtime when the fire broke out.
The house has had no electricity and would only use a gas lamp or candles.
