Manggarai fire victims need to find new place by Sunday

Updated: 20190711

Tebet district head Dyan Airlangga has said that the emergency response period for a fire that broke out on Wednesday on Jl. Swadaya I in Manggarai, South Jakarta, will end Sunday. No casualties were reported in the fire, which damaged 100 to 150 houses and displaced about 300 families.

Dyan said the affected families were evacuated to three locations, namely the Manggarai community health center, Nurul Huda mosque and SDN 5 elementary school.

However, as the school is going to resume activities on Monday after a school holiday, people in the area will need to find a new place to live.

“As the new academic year is about to begin on Monday, we will move to the nearest house of worship,” Dyan said on Wednesday.

She added that the emergency response status would be kept in place until Sunday. As a result, some victims, after living in emergency shelters for three to four days, will need to stay with relatives or find shelter elsewhere while waiting for their homes to be rebuilt.

The Jakarta Social Agency sent 1,000 portions of ready-to-eat meals to the victims and planned to build a public kitchen at the Manggarai district office.

The fire, caused by a short circuit, broke out at 11 a.m. and was contained by 4 p.m.

The South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency deployed 27 firetrucks to extinguish the fire.

However, there was a delay in reaching the destination due to heavy traffic, dense housing and narrow streets.(eyc)
