Building at Jakarta Police headquarters catches fire
Updated: 2019–08–20
A building at the Jakarta Police headquarters in South Jakarta caught on fire on Tuesday morning but was put out despite early concerns that the building contained ammunition.
The fire broke out at 5:38 a.m. Up to 13 fire engines were rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames and some of the firefighters were seen using bulletproof vests, as well as fire suits that included boots, gloves, helmets and protection goggles, Warta Kota reported.
Authorities were able to extinguish the fire and no casualties were reported.
“We put out the fire by 7:45 a.m.,” South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency operational division head Sugeng said as quoted by kompas.com on Tuesday.
He said that the agency had yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
Separately, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono refuted initial information that the fire had gotten into an ammunition room at the headquarters.
He said that the fire only burned in a basement room that was under renovation.
“It is not an ammunition room, but a basement room of about 12 square meters,” Argo said.
He said that the room was filled with flammable items.
“The room contained unused items such as sarong and crates for logistical items,” he said.
Argo said that the Jakarta Police would cooperate with the National Police Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim Polri) forensic lab to investigate the cause of the fire. (ami)
