Navi Mumbai: 4 killed, 3 injured in Uran ONGC plant fire

Updated: 20190903

NAVI MUMBAI: At least four people, including three CISF personnel, were killed after a massive fire broke out in the stormwater drainage at ONGCs gas processing facility in Navi Mumbais Uran area early on Tuesday.

Officials said three Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel also suffered burns in the incident and were admitted to Uran rural hospital.

The state-run petroleum company said that mishap had no impact on the oil processing at the unit, adding that the gas was diverted to its Hazira plant in Gujarats Surat district.

The ONGC claimed that the fire was successfully doused within two hours. However, the exact cause of the fire is yet to ascertained.

A senior CISF official said that the victims died during a blast while they were trying to check gas leakage at the site at around 6.47am.

The deceased included three CISF fire personnel Eranna Nayakka, Satish Prasad Kushwaha, and M K Paswan, who were trying to stop the gas leakage, and resident production superintendent CN Rao of the ONGC, CISFs deputy inspector general (west zone) Nilima Singh said.

Because of the alertness and dedication of the CISF personnel, a major damage to the entire plant and township was averted. The CISF personnel sacrificed their lives in the line of duty,” Singh said.

At least 22 fire tenders, including those of the ONGC, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Reliance Group, Navi Mumbai civic body and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation at Taloja, were pressed into service for firefighting operation.

The situation is under control and we appeal to the villagers staying nearby not to panic, a senior police official said.
