Police fire shots to disperse crowd looting train
Updated: 2019–10–07
Police fired warning shots to stop a mob of people from looting a burning railway carriage in the administrative capital, Nay Pyi Taw, over the weekend, witnesses said.
No one was injured in the incident, which occurred late Saturday near Pyinmana railway station.
The witnesses said the carriage of a Yangon-Mandalay express cargo train caught fire near the station for still undetermined reasons.
“People gathered as the carriage caught fire. Firefighters were putting out the fire. Some people climbed onto the carriage and took things from it,” said Ko Naing Win, who witnessed the incident.
Police shouted at them, but they seemed not to hear. Finally I heard at least two gunshots and everybody scampered away from the train,” he added.
Police refused to confirm or deny the incident.
Nay Pyi Taw Minister of Border Affairs and Security Colonel Min Naung and other officials visited the scene on Saturday night. – Translated
