Car catches fire on busy road, traffic jam delays firemen

CHANDIGARH: A car, driven by a senior citizen, was burnt to a crisp at Sector 7-8 roundabout on Monday afternoon. The driver and the passenger managed to save their lives by jumping out of the car. According to eyewitnesses, fire engines could not reach the spot on time to save the car, as they got stuck in a traffic jam.
According to fire department officials, they received a phone call at around 1.15pm about the fire in the car. A fire tender truck and one fire tender motorcycle were sent to the spot soon after the call. Although they could not save the car, the firemen took control over the fire within 15 minutes after they reached the spot.
The car is 2003 model Maruti 800 driven by Ram Prakash Grover, a resident of resident of Zirakpur. He, along with his wife were going back home after visiting a temple in Sector 19 in Chandigarh. Reportedly, both are safe. But the car got burnt completely in the fire.
According to Amarjit Singh, an official from Sector 17 fire station, reason behind the fire is attributed to a short-circuit in the car.
