‘Diya’ inside high rise flat causes fire in Noida
Updated: 2019–11–08
NOIDA: A fire broke out in a third floor flat at Eldeco Amantran Society in Sector 119 on Thursday morning. No one was injured and residents said the blaze was caused by a lamp (diya) that had been lit during a pooja that the family had performed before leaving the flat.
Kinshuk Sharma, who had taken the flat on rent, said he left the house for Jaipur around 6 am and when he reached Gurgaon, he got a call from his neighbour who informed him about the fire. “We have a wall-mounted wooden temple in our living room next to our balcony. I had lit a diya before leaving. It must have been due to the diya,” he said. Sharma works as the vice-president at a private e-commerce firm. The fire was spotted around 6.45 am. “The fire alarms did not worked. We informed the fire brigade around 6.55 am,” said Rahul Singhal, secretary, Apartment Owners’ Association (AOA). “The in-house system is nothing but a failure. The alarms, smoke detectors and sprinklers did not work.”
The AOA members said they had raised the issue with the Noida Authority during a meeting October 22. “The builder was asked to submit a report, along with a copy of fire NOC and the approved fire plan. But that has not happened so far,” said Sajnay Mehta, president, AOA. He said an AOA member has requested the authority to conduct an audit of the premises.
The highrise society has 13 residential towers and one commercial tower and out of these, 11 towers have already been handed over to buyers.
Rohit Kishore, CEO, Eldeco, said all fire equipment were running properly that helped to control the fire. “Our on duty team did a commendable job by controlling the fire in a locked apartment. It was caused because the resident left a burning lamp in the flat,” he said.
