Pharma warehouse gutted at Uccasaim
Updated: 2019–10–09
SALIGAO: A warehouse of a pharmaceutical company at Uccasaim was gutted after a fire broke out here on Tuesday morning.
Mapusa fire service personnel managed to save the pharmaceutical items stocked on the ground floor. However, nothing could be salvaged from the first floor of the building. Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines were lost in the fire.
The warehouse belonged to Vishnu Enterprises (pharmaceuticals), and the value of the losses incurred is yet to be ascertained. The total area of the warehouse is 220sqm.
Fire service officials said that the blaze may have started after an exhaust-fan on the first floor caught fire. The entry to the first floor got completely blocked and officials had to break open the windowpanes to let the dense smoke out.
Two fire tenders were pressed into service for the fire-fighting operations. Suresh Shetgaonkar and Vishnu Shetgaonkar owned the ground and first floor, respectively.
“We have asked the owners to give us the details about the items lost, so that we can prepare our report,” said Mapusa fire in-charge Bosco Ferrao.
“We had to enter the godown with the help of a breathing apparatus and we also used a positive-pressure ventilator to push the dense smoke out to facilitate fire-fighting,” Ferrao said.
The Mapusa fire in-charge also said that the owner did not have a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the fire department. The panchayat had issued the NOC, and the owner also had insurance, he added.
